In March 2023, we embarked on a journey that has taken us from the sunny shores of Perth, Australia, to the majestic Canadian Rockies. Accompanied by our beagle and toddler, our adventure began with a long-haul flight destined for the United Kingdom, marking the start of an unforgettable chapter in our lives.
Exploring the Charm of the UK
Our initial days in the UK were filled with exploration. We traveled extensively through the South and Southwest, soaking in the lush landscapes and rich history of the region. Opting for the comfort and flexibility of Airbnb accommodations and a rental car, we immersed ourselves in the local culture and scenery.
As summer approached, we decided to slow down. We settled into a picturesque cottage in the Cotswolds, near Oxford, for four months. This serene retreat became our temporary home, complete with visits from our parents, adding warmth and joy to our stay. During this period, I also achieved a personal milestone by obtaining my Maltese passport at the London embassy.
A European Excursion
In September 2023, our journey took a continental turn. We packed our belongings into our newly purchased car and crossed the English Channel via LeShuttle. What followed was a three-month whirlwind tour of Europe. Our route threaded through France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, and Portugal, each country offering its unique flavors and experiences.
This European leg was not without its challenges. In a twist of plans, our next destination required a quick pivot to Bern, Switzerland, to secure a tourist visa for the US. After a rapid round trip from Portugal to Bern and back, we sold our car in Lisbon. Preparing for the next leg of our journey involved renewing our beagle’s rabies vaccination and blood test, ensuring all was set for our transatlantic flight to Miami.
American Dream on Wheels
Arriving in Miami in December 2023, our American adventure began. We celebrated Christmas at Disney Epcot, an enchanting experience for our toddler. Embracing the American spirit, we purchased a pickup truck and travel trailer, gearing up for a year of exploration across the United States.
Our route carved through the heart of the US, from the southern charm of Georgia and the musical roads of Tennessee to the vast landscapes of Texas, New Mexico, and beyond. Each state offered its unique tapestry of culture and nature, leading us eventually to the stunning expanses of Colorado, Wyoming, and the Dakotas.
Into the Canadian Wilderness
As our six-month US tourist visa neared its expiration, we ventured north into Canada. Here, in the rugged beauty of the Canadian Rockies, we’ve paused to reflect on our journey so far—a tapestry of cultures, landscapes, and memories woven together by the roads we’ve traveled.
This journey has been more than a series of destinations; it has been a profound journey of discovery, challenges, and immense joy.
