Overnight Kimba Highlights

Scenic view of Kimba landscape with the iconic Big Galah statue, showcasing Australias unique beauty and culture #KimbaAdventure

Our recent journey to Kimba was an enlightening experience filled with unique landscapes and local gems. Located around halfway between Adelaide and Perth, Kimba is often referred to as the “halfway across Australia” point. On this trip, we decided to explore not just our destination, but also everything along the way. Below are some of the highlights and observations we gathered during our travel.

Starting the Journey

We began our road trip from Adelaide, excited about what lay ahead. The drive to Kimba is approximately 460 kilometers, which typically takes about 5 hours. We planned for a few stops to break up the drive and experience the Australian countryside.

Highlights Along the Way

  1. Port Augusta: Just over three hours from Adelaide, Port Augusta marks the gateway to the outback. Here, we stopped for lunch and visited the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden. For more information, you can visit their official website.
  2. Iron Knob: Known as the birthplace of the Australian steel industry, Iron Knob was an interesting historical pitstop. We spent some time at the visitor center to learn about the town’s mining history.
  3. Kimba: Arriving in Kimba, we were welcomed by the “Welcome to Kimba” sign, famously known as the Big Galah. Before heading into town, we admired the view from White’s Knob Lookout. See it on Google Maps.

Observations Along the Road

Driving through the Eyre Peninsula was a serene experience. We noted a few key observations about the region:

  • Rich Agricultural Fields: The expanses of wheat and barley fields stretched as far as the eye could see, providing an insight into the area’s agricultural backbone.
  • Infrequent Traffic: The roads were mostly open with few vehicles, making for a peaceful drive.
  • Cellular Connectivity: Connectivity was sporadic in some outback areas, so it was beneficial to download maps in advance.

Exploring Kimba

Once in Kimba, we spent time exploring its art and heritage. The town is renowned for its silo art, a massive mural that depicts themes of history and community spirit. More details can be found at the Kimba Community Website.

Accommodation and Dining

For our overnight stay, we chose a local motel. Kimba offers several lodging options from motels to caravan parks. Dining options were limited but delightful; we particularly enjoyed dinner at the town’s local pub, where we tasted the local cuisine.
