Embarking on a road trip can be one of the most intriguing and relaxing experiences, especially when you tweak the route to dodge predictable city traffic. Our recent journey to Kimba, situated right at the halfway point across Australia, was a clear highlight, especially since we found a way to avoid the infamous Adelaide traffic. This choice not only saved us time but also added a layer of comfort to our drive.

Choosing the Right Route

When we planned our journey from Melbourne to Kimba, traditionally, travelers would pass straight through Adelaide. Though a picturesque city with plenty to offer, we were keen on minimizing our drive time through its bustling areas. The solution was to take an alternative route, skirting the city to ensure our trip was as stress-free as possible.

Benefits of Avoiding Adelaide Traffic

Routing around Adelaide offered several advantages:

  • Reduced Travel Time: By avoiding the city center, we estimated saving approximately one to two hours off our travel time, depending on the traffic conditions encountered.
  • Lower Stress Levels: Avoiding congested zones meant less stop-and-go, allowing us to maintain a constant speed.
  • Fuel Efficiency: With fewer slowdowns and a steadier pace, our fuel consumption improved significantly.

The Journey Plan

  1. Start: We left Melbourne early, aiming to reach Kimba in about a day’s drive.
  2. Bypassing Adelaide: Shifting our approach to bypass the city, we took scenic rural roads, allowing for beautiful landscapes and easier driving.
  3. Route Details: We followed the Southeast Freeway, then transitioned to the North-South Motorway, finally joining the A1 [Augusta Highway](https://goo.gl/maps/PHtj7bFMnC82) near Port Wakefield.
  4. Final Stretch: The last leg of our journey was straightforward along the Eyre Peninsula, bringing us seamlessly into Kimba.
