Exploring Canyonlands National Park ‘Island in the Sky’ Section

Last summer, we had the opportunity to visit Canyonlands National Park, specifically focusing on the Island in the Sky district. This region offers stunning vistas and diverse landscapes that make it a must-see destination for nature enthusiasts. However, dogs are not allowed on any of the trails and drones cannot be used.

Getting There

The Island in the Sky is approximately Canyonlands National Park, Utah. We drove from Salt Lake City, covering a distance of around 240 miles, which took us about four hours. The scenic drive itself was a precursor to the beauty awaiting us at the park.

Visitor Information

  • Park Area: 337,598 acres
  • Elevation: Ranges from 3,700 to 5,800 feet
  • Best Time to Visit: Spring and fall for mild weather
  • Entrance Fee: $30 per vehicle

Main Attractions in the Island in the Sky

  1. Grand View Point: Offers panoramic views of the Colorado River.
  2. Mosaic Canyon: Known for its smooth, polished marble walls.
  3. Upheaval Dome: A mysterious geological formation with hiking trails.
  4. Green River Overlook: Stunning views of the Green River winding through the canyon.

Activities We Enjoyed

  • Hiking: Trails range from easy walks to challenging hikes, accommodating all skill levels.
  • Photography: The landscape provides ample opportunities for capturing breathtaking images.
  • Stargazing: With minimal light pollution, the night sky was exceptionally clear.
  • Wildlife Viewing: We spotted various species, including bighorn sheep and numerous bird types.

  • Plan Ahead: Some trails require permits, and accommodations can fill up quickly during peak seasons.
  • Stay Hydrated: Carry plenty of water, especially during summer hikes.
  • Check Weather Conditions: Weather can change rapidly, so it’s important to be prepared.
  • Respect the Environment: Follow Leave No Trace principles to preserve the park’s natural beauty.

Within the Island in the Sky district, the main roads are paved and easily navigable by car. We utilized the Grand View Point Road to access various viewpoints and trailheads.

  • Bear Canister Requirements: Required for overnight visitors to prevent wildlife encounters.
