On our recent journey from Sydney to Perth, we decided to stop and stay overnight in Kimba, South Australia (for free!). Known as the “Halfway Across Australia” point, Kimba provided a convenient base for us as we made our way across South Australia. With a population of around 1,000, Kimba may be small, but it offers everything one might need for a restful stopover.
Why Choose Kimba?
Kimba is strategically located along Eyre Highway, making it a perfect stop for those traveling from Adelaide to Perth. Here are a few reasons why we opted to stay the night:
- It’s almost the midpoint between the eastern and western coasts of Australia.
- The town offers a range of accommodation options to suit different budgets.
- It’s a great opportunity to explore local attractions during the break from driving.
Accommodation Options
We found several accommodation types to choose from, each providing different amenities. Here’s what you can expect:
- Hotels/Motels: Kimba Gateway Hotel is a popular choice. With comfortable rooms and an on-site restaurant, it offers convenience and hospitality. See on Google Maps.
- Caravan Parks: Kimba Caravan Park provided facilities for campers and caravans, including kitchens, laundry, and even a playground. More details can be found on Google Maps.
- Airbnb: There are options available for more personalized stays, with homes and private rooms offering local charm.
Exploring Local Attractions
While staying overnight in Kimba, we took the opportunity to explore some of its unique attractions:
- The Big Galah: A quintessential Aussie roadside stop, this 8-meter-high sculpture is perfect for a photo op.
- Silo Art: Known for its stunning artwork, Kimba’s painted silos are worth a visit. The murals capture rural life and the spirit of the community.
- Parks and Trails: If you have a bit more time, the Roora Nature Trail offers a lovely walk with native flora and fauna.
Practical Tips for Staying Overnight in Kimba
Here are a few practical tips based on our experience:
- Fuel Up: Make sure to top up on fuel as the next large town can be a substantial distance away.
- Check Opening Times: Kimba is a small town, so check the opening times of restaurants and shops to plan your visit.
- Weather Considerations: The climate can change rapidly, so pack accordingly.
Overall, choosing to stay overnight in Kimba during our road trip to Perth was a practical and enjoyable decision. With comfortable accommodations and interesting local experiences, it created a perfect break in our journey, setting us up for the next leg of our trip rested and ready.
