Last month, we visited Carlsbad Caverns National Park, located in southeastern New Mexico. Known for its stunning underground formations, we were excited to experience the park’s natural beauty. However, despite our enthusiasm, we didn’t get the chance to explore the caves due to a timed booked ticket system.

Getting to Carlsbad Caverns National Park

Carlsbad Caverns National Park is approximately 275 miles southeast of El Paso, Texas. We drove there by car, enjoying the scenic route along Google Maps. The drive took us approximately four and a half hours, covering diverse landscapes from desert plains to rugged hills.

Things to Do Outside the Caverns

Even though we didn’t enter the caves, there were plenty of activities to enjoy around the park:

1. Hiking: The park offers several hiking trails, ranging from easy walks to more challenging hikes. The Rattlesnake Canyon Trail was a favorite among visitors.
2. Wildlife Watching: The area is home to diverse wildlife, including bats, birds, and deer. Early mornings provided the best opportunities for sightings.
3. Stargazing: Due to its remote location, Carlsbad Caverns is an excellent spot for observing the night sky. We spent an evening marveling at the constellations.
4. Visitor Center Exhibits: The visitor center features informative displays about the geology and history of the caverns, which we found educational.

• Entrance Fees: As of our visit, the entrance fee for a private vehicle was $15, valid for seven days.
