Review of GiffGaff SIM Card and PAYG Plans

When it comes to mobile connectivity on the go, particularly for digital nomads or frequent travelers, finding a reliable and cost-effective SIM card can be a challenge. I recently used a GiffGaff SIM card for 80 days while traveling across the UK and Europe. My experience was generally positive, with a few exceptions, notably in Switzerland. This review aims to provide a detailed technical breakdown of GiffGaff’s services, focusing on network performance, coverage, and pricing, with insights for technically-minded readers.

GiffGaff Overview

GiffGaff operates as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) in the UK, utilizing the O2 network infrastructure (Telefónica UK). As an MVNO, GiffGaff leverages O2’s existing 2G, 3G, 4G, and, in some areas, 5G networks to provide services to its customers. GiffGaff’s unique selling proposition revolves around its no-contract, Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) plans, which offer flexibility without locking customers into long-term commitments.

Network Coverage and Performance

UK Network Performance

In the UK, GiffGaff’s performance is highly dependent on O2’s network, which covers approximately 99% of the UK population. However, the experience can vary depending on location.

  • 2G (GSM/GPRS/EDGE): This is available in most parts of the UK but is primarily a fallback for voice and text services in areas with poor 3G or 4G coverage.
  • 3G (UMTS/HSPA): Provides decent coverage in urban and suburban areas, with average download speeds of 3-8 Mbps.
  • 4G (LTE): The most commonly used network, with widespread coverage and average speeds ranging from 20-50 Mbps, depending on the location and network congestion.
  • 5G: GiffGaff started offering 5G in 2020 in select cities through O2’s network, with the potential for download speeds up to 200 Mbps under optimal conditions.

During my time in the UK, the 4G network was reliable in most areas, including rural locations, although speeds could dip during peak hours or in crowded city centers.

European Roaming Performance

GiffGaff provides roaming services across the European Economic Area (EEA) without additional charges, thanks to EU regulations that allow ‘roam like at home’ within member states.

  • Coverage: I experienced stable 4G connections in most of the countries I visited, including France, Germany, Belgium, and Spain. The transition between networks was seamless, and I could access data, make calls, and send texts without interruption.
  • Speed and Reliability: While in urban areas across Europe, I consistently accessed 4G networks with speeds comparable to those in the UK. In rural or remote areas, I occasionally encountered slower speeds or dropped to 3G or even 2G, but these instances were rare.

Switzerland Exception

Switzerland, while in Europe, is not part of the EU or EEA. GiffGaff does not include Switzerland in its free roaming zone, which resulted in my SIM not working there. This is an important consideration for travelers planning to visit Switzerland, as additional costs may be incurred, or a separate local SIM card may be needed.

PAYG Plans and Flexibility

GiffGaff’s PAYG model is designed with flexibility in mind, offering various ‘Goodybags’—monthly bundles that include data, texts, and minutes at different price points. The lack of a contract makes it ideal for travelers who may only need service for short periods.

  • £6 Goodybag: 500MB data, 300 minutes, and unlimited texts.
  • £10 Goodybag: 15GB data, unlimited minutes, and texts.
  • £20 Goodybag: 100GB data, unlimited minutes, and texts.
  • £25 Goodybag: Unlimited data, minutes, and texts (with a Fair Usage Policy that may slow speeds after 650GB).

International Calls: GiffGaff offers competitive rates for international calls, with charges as low as 2p per minute to some countries. Calls within the EU and back to the UK while roaming are included in your Goodybag.

Rollover Data: Unlike some other networks, GiffGaff does not offer data rollover. This means any unused data at the end of your Goodybag period is lost.

Technical Features and SIM Activation

Setting up the GiffGaff SIM card is straightforward. Upon receiving the SIM, activation is done online, where you can select your Goodybag or use PAYG credit. For technical users, the APN (Access Point Name) settings are automatically configured upon inserting the SIM into your device, though they can be manually adjusted if needed.

APN Settings:

  • APN: giffgaff.com
  • Username: giffgaff
  • Password: Leave blank
  • MCC: 234
  • MNC: 10
  • Authentication Type: PAP
  • APN Type: default,supl,mms

GiffGaff also supports tethering, allowing you to use your phone as a mobile hotspot with any Goodybag plan, which was particularly useful during my travels when Wi-Fi was unreliable.

Technical Support and Community

One of GiffGaff’s strengths is its active community-based support model. Instead of traditional customer service, GiffGaff relies on its user community to answer questions and resolve issues. This approach might appeal to tech-savvy users who prefer a self-service model and enjoy contributing to forums.

However, for those who prefer direct customer service, this model can be frustrating, as response times can vary depending on community activity. Additionally, there is a support team available via the online dashboard, but responses may take up to 24 hours.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the GiffGaff SIM card and PAYG plans offer an excellent value proposition for travelers, particularly within the UK and Europe (excluding Switzerland). The flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and solid performance across multiple countries make it a great choice for digital nomads, remote workers, or any traveler needing reliable mobile connectivity without long-term commitments.

For technical users, the straightforward setup, reliable APN configuration, and community-driven support add additional appeal. However, the lack of coverage in Switzerland and reliance on community-based support are important considerations.
