Our journey exploring the Great Australian Bight began early in the morning, as we set out to experience its stunning coastal views. Known for its spectacular cliffs and abundant marine life, this natural wonder offered us an unforgettable adventure. In this blog post, I’ll share our morning exploring this incredible stretch of coastline, including highlights and practical information for future visitors.

Understanding the Great Australian Bight

The Great Australian Bight is a vast oceanic bight, or large open bay, located along the southern coast of Australia. Spanning over 1,160 kilometers, it is characterized by its dramatic cliffs that rise up to 60 meters above sea level. As one of the most pristine marine environments in the world, it is home to an array of marine species, making it a key area for conservation.

Our Morning Adventure

We began our expedition from the Nullabor Roadhouse, which serves as a gateway to the Bight. After a quick breakfast, we headed east along the Eyre Highway, which offers several vantage points for viewing the coastline.

Carry cash with you sometimes the EFTPOS is down. So can’t pay by My only disappointment was the locked gate and entry fee to see the bite. Only open between 8.30-3.30. I rocked up for a sunrise view. Another natural wonder no longer free.

Here is a quick outline of our itinerary:

  1. Departure from Nullabor Roadhouse.
  2. Stop at Head of Bight for lookout and (maybe) whale watching.
  3. Walk along the Bunda Cliffs for panoramic views.

Highlights of Our Walk

  • Head of Bight: This area is a premier spot for whale watching, particularly between May and October when southern right whales migrate to the region. [View on Google Maps]
  • Bunda Cliffs: We took a leisurely walk along the cliff tops, enjoying breathtaking views over the Southern Ocean. The Bunda Cliffs are the longest line of sea cliffs globally and provide a perfect vantage point to appreciate the vastness of the Bight. [View on Google Maps]
