Sniffy the Beagle’s Adventure at San Simeon: Chasing Squirrels and Meeting Elephant Seals

A summer day in California is the perfect backdrop for an adventure, and when it involves our beagle, Sniffy, it’s bound to be a day filled with excitement, exploration, and of course, some hilarious moments. We recently took Sniffy to San Simeon, where he had the chance to experience something new and truly remarkable—the majestic elephant seals.

The Journey to San Simeon

San Simeon, a small coastal town along California’s famous Highway 1, is best known for its sprawling beaches, historic Hearst Castle, and the large colony of elephant seals that calls the area home. On this particular day, the sun was shining, and the gentle breeze from the Pacific Ocean made it a perfect day for a road trip. Sniffy, as always, was eager to jump into the car, his tail wagging with anticipation. Little did he know, this trip would introduce him to creatures he had never seen before.

Chasing Squirrels and Exploring the Coastline

Upon arriving at San Simeon, we headed straight for the viewing area where the elephant seals gather. But before we could even catch a glimpse of these massive marine mammals, Sniffy’s attention was caught by something much smaller and more familiar—a squirrel. The coastal path was dotted with these bushy-tailed critters, and Sniffy was quick to notice. His nose to the ground and ears perked up, he darted off in pursuit of one that had dared to venture a little too close.

Watching Sniffy chase squirrels along the rugged cliffs of San Simeon was an entertaining sight. His little legs moved quickly, his ears flopping wildly in the wind as he zigzagged across the path. Of course, the squirrels were too fast and too clever, always managing to stay just out of reach, much to Sniffy’s frustration. But for him, the thrill of the chase was more than enough.

Meeting the Elephant Seals

After Sniffy had exhausted himself chasing squirrels, we made our way to the elephant seal viewing area. The first thing that hits you is the sheer size of these animals. Elephant seals can weigh up to 4,000 pounds, and their presence is both awe-inspiring and humbling. For Sniffy, however, they were simply another fascinating curiosity.

Elephant seals are named for their large size and the males’ distinctive, trunk-like noses. These marine mammals are divided into two species: the Northern elephant seal, which can be found along the Pacific Coast of North America, and the Southern elephant seal, found in the Southern Hemisphere. San Simeon is one of the prime locations for viewing Northern elephant seals in California, with the Piedras Blancas Rookery being one of the most accessible sites for visitors.

Elephant seals are seasonal visitors to the California coast, with different events in their life cycle bringing them ashore at various times of the year. From December to March, the beaches of San Simeon are teeming with life as the seals come ashore to give birth, breed, and molt. During this time, the beaches are crowded with adult seals, pups, and plenty of action as males compete for dominance and mating rights. Another molting period occurs in the spring and summer, when the seals return to shed their old skin and fur.

The seals spend much of their time at sea, diving to incredible depths in search of food, including squid, fish, and other deep-sea creatures. Their ability to dive over 5,000 feet and stay underwater for up to two hours is one of their most impressive adaptations. On land, however, they are much more sluggish, moving in a caterpillar-like motion that belies their grace in the water.

As we stood there, watching the seals bask in the sun and occasionally let out a deep, resonating call, Sniffy’s attention shifted from the now elusive squirrels to these new, enormous creatures. He approached the fence cautiously, his nose twitching as he took in the unfamiliar scent of the ocean and the seals. For a moment, he stood still, ears alert, as if trying to figure out what these strange animals were.

It wasn’t long before the wind picked up, sending a gentle breeze through Sniffy’s fur and causing his ears to flap comically. He seemed to enjoy the sensation, turning his face into the wind and sniffing at the salty air. Every now and then, a seal would shift or make a noise, and Sniffy would glance over, seemingly trying to decide whether they were friend or foe.

The Elephant Seal Population in California

The story of the Northern elephant seals is one of recovery and resilience. In the 19th century, these animals were hunted almost to extinction for their blubber, which was used to produce oil. By the early 20th century, it was believed that only a small population remained on an island off the coast of Baja California. However, through conservation efforts and legal protections, the population began to recover, and today, there are over 200,000 Northern elephant seals, with many returning to the beaches of California each year.

The Piedras Blancas Rookery near San Simeon is one of the best places to observe these animals in their natural habitat. The viewing area is open year-round and offers visitors a close-up view of the seals without disturbing them. Educational displays provide information about the seals’ life cycle, behavior, and the conservation efforts that have helped their population rebound.

For visitors like us, it’s a unique opportunity to witness these incredible creatures up close. For Sniffy, it was a day filled with new experiences, from the thrill of chasing squirrels to the awe of meeting the elephant seals.

A Day Well Spent

After spending some time observing the seals—and after many photos were taken, of course—we decided it was time to head back. Sniffy, still energized from the day’s events, happily trotted alongside us, occasionally stopping to give one last sniff at the path or glance back at the seals.

As we drove away from San Simeon, Sniffy settled into the back seat, his head resting on the window sill, ears still slightly blowing in the breeze from the open window. It was clear he had enjoyed his day, filled with new scents, sights, and plenty of action.

San Simeon proved to be the perfect spot for a summer adventure with Sniffy. The combination of coastal beauty, wildlife encounters, and the joy of seeing our beagle explore and interact with his surroundings made it a day to remember. Whether it was the excitement of chasing squirrels or the curiosity sparked by the elephant seals, Sniffy’s day at San Simeon was a testament to the simple pleasures of travel and the joy our furry friends bring to every journey.
