The Final Stretch: Driving Along the Great Eastern Highway to Perth

We recently embarked on a memorable road trip driving along the Great Eastern Highway to Perth. This scenic route, stretching approximately 600 kilometers, connects Kalgoorlie to Perth, offering diverse landscapes and a slice of Western Australia’s natural beauty.

The Route

The Great Eastern Highway starts in Kalgoorlie, a town known for its rich history and gold mining heritage. From there, the highway travels westward, traversing through the heart of the Wheatbelt region before reaching Perth. To get a better sense of the journey, you can view the route on Google Maps.

Planning the Journey

We made sure to plan our trip accordingly, considering the distance and the amenities available along the way. Here’s what we considered:

  1. Vehicle Preparation: Ensure the car is in good condition, with a full tank of fuel, and carry spare tires.
  2. Accommodation: Book accommodations in advance, especially in peak travel periods.
  3. Supplies: Pack enough food, water, and any necessary medications.

Stops Along the Way

Driving through the Great Eastern Highway offers several great stops that showcase the rich variety of Western Australia’s interior:

  • Coolgardie: Known as the birthplace of the gold rush in Western Australia, it’s a great start to understanding the region’s history.
  • Southern Cross: A small town ideal for a short rest or a meal. It serves as the gateway to the goldfields.
  • Merredin: The largest town in the Wheatbelt, offering services like supermarkets and cafes.
  • York: Western Australia’s first inland settlement, with well-preserved colonial buildings and numerous walking trails.

Road Conditions and Safety

The Great Eastern Highway is well-maintained, but being a long drive, we reminded ourselves to stay vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines. A few tips we followed included:

  • Driving within speed limits and adapting to road conditions.
  • Taking regular breaks to avoid fatigue.
  • Being mindful of wildlife, especially at dawn and dusk.

Reaching the final stretch of our journey on the Great Eastern Highway and arriving in Perth was rewarding. This highway not only provided us with a direct route to the city but also enriched our journey with glimpses into the region’s history, culture, and natural wonders. It’s a route worth considering for anyone planning a trip across Western Australia.
