Getting to Tucson

Our journey began with a comfortable drive along the I-10 East, covering about 116 miles from Phoenix to Tucson. It took us approximately two hours, allowing us to start our adventure early in the morning.

For those wondering about directions, here’s the route we took.

Exploring the Saguaro National Park

Our first stop was the iconic Saguaro National Park. We were keen to explore this natural wonder, home to the largest cacti in the United States. The park, split into the east and west districts, offers a variety of scenic drives and hiking trails.

We opted for our favorite hike, the Douglas Spring Trail. Hereโ€™s a quick breakdown of the experience:

  1. Trail Length: 5.8 miles round trip
  2. Elevation Gain: 1,000 feet
  3. Trailhead Location: Eastern district of the park

We recommend checking the National Parks Service site for more information about the trails and entry fees.

Lunch at El Charro Cafรฉ

After a morning full of exploring, we headed to El Charro Cafรฉ, the oldest Mexican restaurant in Arizona. Founded in 1922, the restaurant is famed for its carne seca, a must-try dish for anyone visiting Tucson.

  • Location: 311 N Court Ave, Tucson, AZ
  • Specialty: Authentic Mexican Cuisine

Discovering the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum

Our next stop was the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, a fascinating fusion of zoo, botanical garden, art gallery, and natural history museum. Spanning 98 acres, the museum provided an educational and engaging look at the flora and fauna of Arizona.

Here are some highlights:

  • Aquarium featuring the Colorado River and Gulf of California
  • Raptor Free Flight presentations
  • More than 230 animal species and 1,200 types of plants

Strolling Through Historic Fourth Avenue

Finally, we wrapped up our day trip with a visit to Historic Fourth Avenue, a vibrant district known for its eclectic shops, cafes, and bars. It offered a perfect end to our trip, allowing us to unwind and shop for some unique souvenirs.

We browsed through various boutiques and finished our evening with a coffee at a cozy local cafe.

Our day trip to Tucson, AZ, was a delightful blend of nature, culture, and gastronomy. We hope this guide offers a glimpse into what this remarkable city has to offer, and perhaps inspires you to take your own journey to explore Tucson.
