We recently embarked on an exciting cross-country journey, crossing from South Australia into Western Australia. One of the key highlights of this road trip was our stop at the Border Village, an essential checkpoint that offers various amenities and a glimpse into the region’s history.
Location and Directions
Located on the Eyre Highway, the Border Village is aptly named as it marks the border between South Australia and Western Australia. You can find it just a few kilometers from the famous Nullarbor Plain. For those planning a visit, here is the exact location on Google Maps.
What to Expect at the Border Village
Upon reaching the Border Village, here are a few things you can expect:
- A quarantine checkpoint where all vehicles are inspected for fruits, vegetables, and other biosecurity risks.
- Fuel and basic supplies available at the roadhouse.
- Accommodation options for those looking to rest before continuing their journey.
- An intriguing time zone change, as Western Australia is 1.5 hours behind South Australia.
- True Blue Rooey the giant kangaroo with a jar of vegemite
Border Quarantine and Biosecurity
When crossing into Western Australia, it’s crucial to be aware of the strict biosecurity laws. The border checks are thorough, as the state aims to prevent the introduction of pests and diseases. Here’s what we experienced during the quarantine inspection:
- Vehicles are required to stop for inspection.
- Officers check for prohibited items such as fresh fruit, honey, and plants. We were asked about grass and grass seeds, with a cursory look inside the campervan.
- Travelers must declare any items of concern.
For a detailed list of prohibited items, you can visit the Western Australia’s Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development website.
Services and Accommodation at the Border Village
The Border Village offers essential services to travelers. During our stop, we found the following amenities particularly useful:
- Fuel Station: A perfect spot to refill before heading into the vast stretches of Western Australia.
- Motel and Caravan Park: Accommodation options are available, ranging from basic motel rooms to campsites.
- Restaurant and Bar: A place to enjoy a meal or a drink after a long day on the road.
Exploring the Surrounding Area
While the Border Village itself serves as a necessary rest stop, the surrounding area offers opportunities for exploration:
- Nullarbor Plain: A unique landscape that stretches over 1,100 kilometers, famous for its treeless plains and limestone bedrock.
- Eyre Bluff: Not far from the Border Village, offering stunning views of the Great Australian Bight.
Crossing into Western Australia and stopping at the Border Village was an integral part of our journey. With its essential services, stunning landscapes, and educational biosecurity measures, it provided an informative and enriching travel experience.
