After spending the last month travelling down from Cancun, Mexico to Panama City, Panama via public transport. We have navigated many of the Central America borders crossings on our own. Hope the below information will help you on your future travel plans.
Mexico: We arrived into Mexico by plane at Cancun airport. On arrival you head to immigration where you will hand over your Mexico Immgration/Customs form which will either be handed to you on the plane or when you head into the immigraton hall. The immigration officer will stamp your passport and give you the bottom half of your Immigration/Customs form which you need to hang onto, as this is handed back when you depart Mexico. We were lucky with our immigration officer, they just stamped our passport and onward we went, no questions asked about onward travel. For our departure we left via Ferry from Chetumal. At the ferry terminal we lined up to have us stamped out of Mexico, the immigration officer did ask us to pay the departure tax of 580 pesos, however as we showed our arrival flight ticket which showed paid taxes on it, he let us go without paying the departure tax.
Belize: For arrival into Belize we entered by ferry at San Pedro, where you will disembark from the ferry take your luggage with you through to Immigration/ Customs. First you will have your passport stamped, then asked if you are bringing any food into the country. After this you will pay your arrival tax which is $2US per person, they will give you change in Belizian dollars. You can only pay with cash. We departed Belize by bus
