What We Packed for a Nullarbor Plain Road Trip

Setting off on a two-week road trip across the spectacular Nullarbor Plain was no small undertaking. With vast distances between towns and plenty of unique Australian landscapes to explore, packing effectively was crucial. We had to ensure that we had everything we needed for both comfort and safety, while keeping our load manageable.

The Journey Plan

Our journey began in Perth, WA and concluded in Adelaide, SA. Covering approximately 1,675 km, the Nullarbor Plain section between Norseman and Ceduna presented unique challenges. We planned our stops carefully, allowing us to enjoy various attractions along the way, such as the Great Australian Bight and whale watching near Head of Bight.

What We Packed

Packing for the Nullarbor Plain meant planning for long stretches of road without services, variable weather, and varying landscapes. Here is our essential packing list:

Clothing and Personal Gear

  • Lightweight, breathable clothing for daytime temperatures.
  • Warm layers for chilly nights.
  • Comfortable walking shoes and sandals.
  • Sunglasses and wide-brimmed hats for sun protection.

Travel and Road Essentials

  1. Maps and Navigation: While we relied on GPS, we also packed paper maps as a backup. Some remote areas had limited reception.
  2. Vehicle Spare Parts: A spare tire, jack, and toolkit were non-negotiable due to the isolated nature of the journey. We also carried spare engine oil and coolant.
  3. Fuel Supplies: Although our car had a good fuel range, we filled up at every available station to avoid being caught out. There are stretches where fuel stops can be over 200 km apart!

Camping and Accommodation Supplies

  • Tent and sleeping bags for camping under the stars.
  • Portable cooking equipment and basic utensils.
  • Insect repellent and sunscreen.
  • Reusable water bottles and a minimum of 20 liters of water, as recommended by travelers who have tackled the route before us.

Food and Provisions

As dining options are limited across the Nullarbor, we packed more food than we thought we’d need. Non-perishable items such as:

  • Canned beans and vegetables.
  • Pasta and grains.
  • Nuts and dried fruits for snacking.

Entertainment and Comfort

  • Audio books and music playlists for long drives.
  • Camera and batteries for capturing breathtaking landscapes.

Safety Considerations

The vastness of the Nullarbor Plain means that safety should always be a priority. We informed family of our itinerary and expected check-in times. Mobile coverage can be patchy, so having emergency contacts written down was essential. Additionally, keeping a printed version of emergency numbers like the Royal Flying Doctor Service was reassuring.

If you’re preparing for a similar adventure, make sure to check regional travel resources such as Nullarbor Roadhouse and state tourism websites for real-time updates on road conditions.

Our two-week road trip across the Nullarbor Plain was an awe-inspiring adventure. Proper planning and packing allowed us to enjoy the journey worry-free. We hope our packing list and tips can aid in your exploration of Australia’s vast outback.
