From Port Augusta to Kimba: A Long Drive Through South Australia

Our journey started in the industrious town of Port Augusta, known as the “Crossroads of Australia”, located about 307 kilometers north of Adelaide. It serves as a significant hub where roads from the south, east, and west converge. As we embarked on our long drive through South Australia, we were keen to explore what the Eyre Peninsula had to offer, especially on our way to the charming town of Kimba.

Starting Point: Port Augusta

Port Augusta, sitting on the quiet waters of the Spencer Gulf, has a population of around 13,000 people. It’s famous for its outback scenery and access to pristine natural areas. The Long Drive to Kimba

The drive from Port Augusta to Kimba spans about 155 kilometers, taking around 1 hour and 45 minutes via the Eyre Highway. As you drive, the landscape of South Australia unfolds elegantly; fields stretch endlessly, dotted by the occasional farmstead and glimpses of local wildlife.

Key Stops Along the Way

  1. Iron Knob: About 70 km out of Port Augusta, this small town is known for its rich mining history. There’s an informative visitor center that provides insights into the mining operations that have taken place here since 1899.
  2. Observation Points: Throughout the drive, you’ll find several observation points offering panoramic views of the vast Australian outback. These make excellent spots for a quick rest and some memorable photographs.

Arriving in Kimba
