Getting Started: Port Augusta

Our adventure began in Port Augusta, a major seaport located at the head of the Spencer Gulf. It’s a small town with a population of around 13,000 people, making it a gateway for those traveling north to the Outback or west to the Eyre Peninsula.

For anyone visiting, we recommend stopping by the Wadlata Outback Centre. It provides an engaging insight into the history and environment of the Outback region.

The Drive to Iron Knob

After leaving Port Augusta, our next stop was Iron Knob, approximately 52 kilometers away via the Eyre Highway. Iron Knob is known for its mining history, particularly for iron ore, which significantly contributed to Australia’s industrial development.

Here’s a quick list of what to see in Iron Knob:

  • The Mining Museum
  • The historical lookout for panoramic views of the town and mine

We found the location on Google Maps quite easily, and it’s a worthy stop.
