Arrival and Introduction

Upon our arrival, we were warmly greeted by the staff and introduced to the history of Haigh’s. Established in 1915, it remains Australia’s oldest family-run chocolate manufacturer. The company has upheld its commitment to quality and sustainability, sourcing its cocoa beans through a verified ethical supply chain.

The Chocolate-Making Process

During our tour, we were taken through a series of stages in the chocolate-making process. Here’s what we learned:

  1. Roasting: The cocoa beans are carefully roasted to develop their flavor.
  2. Winnowing: After roasting, the beans are cracked and the shells are removed, leaving the nibs.
  3. Grinding: The nibs are ground to create cocoa mass, a thick paste from which chocolate is made.
  4. Conching: This process involves continuously mixing the chocolate with a unique conche machine to enhance its texture and flavor.
  5. Tempering: The chocolate is then tempered to ensure a glossy finish and crisp snap.

Chocolate Tasting Experience

After learning about the chocolate-making process, we had the opportunity to taste some of Haigh’s delicious products. Here are a few of our favorites:

  • Milk Chocolate Speckles
  • Dark Chocolate Orange
  • Soft Caramel Milk Chocolate

Each piece we tasted was a testament to the dedication and craftsmanship of the Haigh’s team. Their chocolates stand out, not just for their taste, but also for their commitment to using the finest ingredients.

Sustainability Efforts

We were impressed by Haigh’s commitment to sustainability. They have reduced their carbon footprint by employing solar energy and efficient waste management practices in their production process. Additionally, their packaging is designed to be both attractive and eco-friendly.

Our tour inside Haigh’s Chocolate Factory was both educational and delightful. We left with a deeper appreciation for the art of chocolate-making and a few bags of our favorite treats to share with friends and family. If you are a chocolate enthusiast visiting Australia, we highly recommend including a visit to Haigh’s in your itinerary. For further details, you can check out Haigh’s official website.
